A general guide to what most patients can expect during recovery. Your own timeline will be personalized to your procedure and health history.
Before You Go Home
You will receive a personalized written recovery plan covering medications, activity restrictions, incision care, and when to call the office. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night after any procedure requiring sedation or general anesthesia.
General Recovery Timeline
What to expect, phase by phase.
Immediately After Surgery
Most patients spend the first several hours in a recovery area under close observation before being discharged home with a caregiver. You will receive written instructions covering medication, activity limits, incision care, and warning signs to watch for.
The First Week
Expect swelling and bruising that peaks in the first few days and gradually improves. Rest, hydration, and gentle movement (as directed) support healing. Most patients are seen in follow-up during this period to check incisions and remove any surface sutures or drains.
Weeks Two Through Six
Swelling continues to resolve and most patients feel comfortable resuming light daily activities and, for many procedures, non-strenuous work. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and sun exposure to healing areas are typically restricted until cleared.
Three to Twelve Months
Final results continue to refine as residual swelling resolves and scars mature and fade. Dr. Gupta schedules longer-interval follow-up visits during this period to monitor your outcome and address any questions.
When to Call the Office
Contact the office promptly if you experience fever, unusual or increasing pain, signs of infection, excessive bleeding, or any symptom your written instructions identify as a reason to call. After-hours guidance is provided as part of your discharge instructions.
